Gioia Tauro, Italy (Ports Europe) July 2, 2024 – In an incredible event in the Port of Gioia Tauro, the parts of two Chinese-made military drones disguised as wind turbine parts were seized by the authorities.

The parts were found in six containers among replica turbine blades. The drone equipment was impounded as Libya is under an international arms embargo. The event took place on June 18 following information supplied by U.S. intelligence.

The containers were on a ship from Yantian port in China and were scheduled to travel to Benghazi in Libya.

Had they been assembled, the drones would have weighed more than three tonnes with a wingspan of 2o meters and a length of 10 metres.

The joint operation was carried out by the financial police of the Provincial Command of Reggio Calabria in collaboration with the Customs Office of Gioia Tauro.

The Port of Gioia Tauro is a large seaport in southwest Italy and the largest port in the country for container throughput (3.54 million TEU in 2023).
