B2B Logistics Busan & Barcelona hub S.L. established in Catalonia

Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) November 3, 2021 - The ports of Barcelona and Busan (South Korea) have today taken a step forward in their joint logistics alliance with the inauguration of the Korean logistics platform located in the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) of the Port of Barcelona and the signing of the agreement to set up the company that will manage and promote this platform in Korea. The presidents of the ports of Busan and Barcelona, Kang Joon suk and Damià Calvet, have signed an agreement to set up the company B2B Logistics Busan & Barcelona hub S.L., which will be responsible for managing and promoting the stable logistics platform for Korean companies in Barcelona. This company, which is already in operation, will be chaired by the vice-president of the Port of Busan, Boo-Won Kang, while the executive management will include head of Strategy of the Port of Barcelona, Jordi Torrent. The Port of Busan holds 51% of the company's shares and the Port of Barcelona 49%. The Catalan and Korean delegations, which in addition to executives from the Port of Busan also included representatives from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, headed by its Deputy Director of Logistics and Port Planning, Kim Soon-yeon, also inaugurated the warehouse in which this logistics platform will operate. The facilities occupy a warehouse of 8,920 m² and will facilitate the role of the Catalan port as an entry point for Korean products in southern Europe and a distribution centre for the Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian markets. Two Korean freight forwarders with an important international presence and numerous industrial companies from the Asian country have expressed their interest in starting their operations in Barcelona. The logistics platform completes the Port of Busan's strategy in Europe with a double entry point: the Port of Barcelona and the Port of Rotterdam, which has another similar platform for traffic destined for the north of the continent. The President of the Port of Barcelona, Damià Calvet, said: "From today Catalonia and Korea are closer. The ports of Busan and Barcelona have set up a partnership to bring the Korean economy closer to Europe through our port. We are proud that the Port of Busan, Korea's leading port, has chosen Barcelona as a port for southern Europe". Calvet added: "Asia is our reference market and represents more than 50% of the exports and imports that pass through the Port of Barcelona. The Korean economy is particularly technological and we want to focus on attracting these types of goods". Busan is currently the sixth largest port in the world and, apart from being one of the major Asian import and export ports, it is, together with Singapore, one of the two main maritime transhipment hubs in the world.
