Barcelona and Civitavecchia ports BClink project draws to a close

Civitavecchia, Italy (PortSEurope) October 27, 2020 - The BClink project, designed to step up Motorways of the Sea connections between the ports of Barcelona and Civitavecchia has come to a scheduled end with a positive result. The news was released as part of the international event called "Connecting EU Insights" which, started yesterday, it will last until Thursday providing insights on fundamental topics for the development of the maritime sector, the webinar "BClink Project" was an opportunity to communicate the imminent completion of the works on the new pier dedicated to Ro-Ro and Ro-Pax. Today's session, entitled "Infrastructure enhancement and increase in land and port capacity to connect the ports of the Mediterranean" saw the participation of the President of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centro-Settentrionale (AdSP - Centre-North Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority), Francesco Maria di Majo and the Representatives of the Port Authority of Barcelona, Carles Rua Costa, of Grimaldi Group, Paul Kyprianou and of the European Commission, Elena Jenaro. As is well known, the project emphasizes the further growth of the Motorways of the Sea planned for the next few years as an alternative to road transport and thus promotes the maritime dimension of the TEN-T networks. "In 2018", explains the President of the AdSP, Francesco Maria di Majo, "the Barcelona-Civitavecchia route was using up to 90% of its capacity and, without adequate investment, both in the maritime dimension (Grimaldi's ships) and of the terrestrial one (development of port infrastructures), there was the risk of losing market shares. And the political and industrial importance of the investment is demonstrated by the November 2019 visit to Civitavecchia by the Coordinator for the Motorways of the Sea, Kurt Bodewig and the involvement of one of the most important maritime operators of the Motorways of the Sea, the Grimaldi Group". "Thanks to the loans received from the European Union and the European Investment Bank (EIB) loan within less than two years from the awarding of the works and despite the slowdowns due to the health emergency still underway", concluded di Majo, "here in Civitavecchia we have managed to build important infrastructure that will not only allow the implementation of the connection with Spain but will certainly lead, thanks to the availability of two new approaches, to the activation of new commercial lines with the countries of the southern shore of the Mediterranean. The construction of the new wharf, which we will inaugurated in the coming months, will also allow for the separation of traffic within the port area which will serve to better define the specific functional areas and thus avoid congestion, especially on the land side.
