Cádiz Port Authority to tender second phase of the new container terminal in mid-2021.

Cádiz, Spain (PortSEurope) December 23, 2020 - The Bay of Cádiz Port Authority is planning to tender the second phase of the New Container Terminal in mid-2021 at an investment cost of approximately €45 million ($54.85 million). The project will increase the current berthing line of the La Galeona pier by 442 meters to 1,022 meters and the area of the esplanade by 8.3 hectares to 40 hectares of terminal. The plan is to move sand from the preload of the New Container Terminal to a space on the left bank of El Puerto de Santa María that is at lower levels and will therefore improve the conditions of this plot. This operation, which has an investment budget of €593,404, is in the bidding process and will be awarded in the near future. Among the challenges of 2021 is also the recovery of cruise calls, of which port authority president Teófila Martínez has indicated that “they have been lost due to the pandemic in 2020, but the attractiveness of the port for tour operators or shipping companies has not been lost, since that there are 272 announced for next year”. In this sense, the president has commented that "we know that many of these scales, especially in the first semester, will not occur" as a consequence of the health situation, however, "it is a great satisfaction for us to know that they continue to count. with the Port of Cádiz for when this activity recovers”. On the other hand, in the balance of 2020, Martínez highlighted the advanced state of the various investments underway, despite COVID-19, such as the paving of the esplanade and the urbanization of the New Container Terminal, which is expected conclude in April next year. The execution of the complementary lanes for the container cranes of the new terminal is also going at a good pace and is expected to be completed in February 2021, as indicated by the president. The new PIF building, of which Teófila Martínez has highlighted its capacity with 16 loading docks, will end this same month of December. The drying pile walls and the emptying of the false tunnel are also going at a positive rate and the tunnel emptying is expected to be undertaken in June 2021. The president of the port has put on the table in her balance sheet for the year the imminent award of the execution of the rail access to the La Cabezuela-Puerto Real dock by ADIF, the commitment is scarce dates from the inclusion of the Port Authority in the Logistics Network of Andalusia and LÓGICA and also the incorporation of new container lines, such as Containerships and Boluda, which have increased this traffic by 228 percent in tons and 160 percent in teus until November. Likewise, Teófila Martínez has highlighted the work carried out in 2020 in environmental matters, with the implementation of the Environmental Management System certificate, the execution of the environmental screens and meters in Cabezuela and the study for the electrification of the docks. In the same way, the president explained how technical support and the SMART platform are being developed within the Digitization Plan and how 9 of the 68 modules that comprise the plan have already been launched. Regarding marketing, Martínez highlighted that, despite the limitations imposed by COVID-19, around 30 actions have been carried out between missions and participation in online meetings and seminars and that only in the mission with Uruguay, Argentina and Panama they have maintained contact with 40 companies and institutions. "This has allowed us to reposition the Port of the Bay of Cádiz", commented the president, who assures that work will continue to make Cádiz an alternative for importing and exporting with Latin America and Africa, especially.
