The five ports belonging to the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands receive goods to be consumed by the population of the islands, as well as offering passenger services. The Port of Palma handles the greatest volume of general cargo, this exceeding 8.5 million tonnes each year. It also sees 3 million passengers on regular services and cruise liners pass through its facilities annually. In terms of cruise liners, the ports of the Balearic Islands have become leaders in the Western Mediterranean. The port is managed by Autoridad Portuaria de Balears (APB – Port Authority of the Balearic Islands). State ports are managed by Puertos del Estado which executes port policy of the government; made up of 28 port authorities that manage the 46 ports.
