Cold Ironing/Electrification

Cold ironing (shore connection, shore-to-ship power (SSP), onshore power supply (OPS) or alternative maritime power (AMP), is the process of providing dockside electrical power to a ship at berth while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off. Cold ironing allows emergency equipment, refrigeration, cooling, heating, lighting and other equipment to receive continuous electric power while the ship loads or unloads its cargo. This reduces gaseous emissions, noise and vibrations within ports, benefitting port workers and nearby residents. The EALING project (European flagship Action for coLd ironING in ports) is an EU project to electrify all port energy supply.
