Alexandroupoli, Greece (PortSEurope) November 8, 2022 – Greece is set to cancel the privatisation of Port of Alexandroupoli. This was announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during an interview with broadcaster ANT1.
In the interview, the prime minister said that the government has decided that at the present time Alexandroupoli is of such great strategic, geopolitical and energy importance that it must state in state ownership. He gave no further details.
From being a regional port in Greece, the last few years has seen Alexandroupoli become high.profile. From a commercial perspective, it has developed as a regional hub for energy. A supplier of gas to neighbouring countries.
Linked to this is a growing geo-political significance, increased by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and U.S. interest in using the port for transporting equipment for Ukraine and NATO countries in the region. Last May, Athens and Washington updated the mutual Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement which concerns U.S. military presence in Greece.
It seems that the Greek government is not keen to relinquish control of the port under these circumstances.
