Trieste, Italy (Ports Europe) October 9, 2024 – Last week, the European Commission in Brussels said that the planned merger between MSC and HHLA did not give rise to any concerns under competition law and that the effects on the markets are limited. Both businesses have interests in Trieste, Italy.
HHLA is the operator of the HHLA PLT Italy multipurpose terminal in Trieste, which offers container, Ro-Ro and general cargo handling, as well as yard and packaging services.
In 2022, MSC acquired an 80% stake in Trieste Marine Terminal srl (TMT), the concessionaire of the container terminal in the port of Trieste. MSC also plans to convert the former Wartsila plant in Trieste into a plant to manufacture rail wagons.
MSC is also a general customer of the port, both in containers and cruise ships via MSC Cruises.
Ports Europe will report on any market changes created by the HHLA-MSC merger.
