Genoa, Italy (Ports Europe)- March 28, 2024 – The Gedi publisher has announced the signing of a preliminary agreement with the MSC group to sell the Il Secolo XIX newspaper.
Exclusive negotiations to allow due diligence to be carried out will start. The proposed deal includes digital and advertising activities related to Il Secolo XIX and four newspapers. These are The MediTelegraph, L’Avvisatore Marittimo, Il Giornale del Ponente Ligure and TTM – Tecnologie Trasporti Mare.
Gedi Gruppo Editoriale, part of the Exor group, also publishes two of the leading Italian newspapers La Repubblica and La Stampa. Other local newspapers and magazines include National Geographic Italia, the local edition of the Huffington Post and three national radio stations including Radio Deejay.
MSC is owned by Gianluigi Aponte and the group is cash-rich due to very high freight rates. It is looking at acquisitions, including the airport in Genoa.
It seems that logistics giants MSC and CMA CGM could also become competing in the media world.
The purchase follows similar moves by MSC competitor Marseille-based CMA CGM. Last year, the French company purchased the newspapers La Provence and Corse Matin. It also committed to acquire La Tribune, a leading digital business and finance media platform. Earlier this month, the company announced a €1.55 billion deal to acquire Altice Media, France’s third largest media-television group, consisting of five national and ten local television channels, three radio stations, and twenty digital applications.
