Only two small Ukrainian ports operational – both on the Danube River and close to the Black Sea

Izmail, Ukraine (PortSEurope) March 13, 2022 – Izmail and Reni are the only two ports that continue operations in war torn Ukraine that was invaded by Russia on February 24. The country’s largest port of Odessa on the Black Sea is closed, in the Azov Sea, Berdyansk was occupied by Russia and Mariupol has been under heavy bombardment for over a week. The Danube River is a direct link for Ukrainian export to Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany – all members of the European Union. The water level in the river is good for shipping, but upstream in Austria and Germany there is no increase of the number of ships since the war in Ukraine started. This shows the difficulties Ukraine faces trying to redirect Azov and Black seas cargo towards Danube River. Izmail river port is located on the left bank of the Kiliya estuary of the Danube River in the Odessa region on the Ukrainian-Romanian border, some 100 km from the Black Sea. The port unveiled in 2021 plans to build two transshipment complexes with a total cargo capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year and a modern anchorage for small vessels near the port. The first project is for the construction of facilities for handling and storage of general, bulk and liquid cargo, which will increase the volume of cargo handling in Izmail seaport by 200,000 tonnes a year. The second project is a complex for processing of mineral fertilizers in the rear area of berth No. 8 on the territory of the production and transshipment complex No. 1 of State Enterprise Izmail Commercial Sea Port (IZM MTP). This will increase port’s cargo handling capacity by 100,000 tonnes per year. The investor for both projects is the Econovatika company, which owns a complex for storage and transshipment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Izmail port. The cost of each of the two projects is about UAH 10 million (€331,000). Cargo turnover of the Izmail seaport in 2021 was more than 4 million tonnes. The capacity of the port terminals is 9.3 million tonnes. Reni port handled total cargo of about 1.4 million tonnes in 2021, compared to some 800,000 in 2020. The main cargo processed by the port is agricultural crops (corn, wheat, barley, sunflower, meal), petroleum products, chemical bulk, mineral fertilisers in bulk, metals and large equipment. Reni merchant sea-river port is located on the left bank of the Danube in southern Ukraine. The latest update form the invasion is that Russia is still using its Azov Sea ports for grain export. The Sea of Azov is a shallow inland body of water smaller than Lake Michigan bordered by Russia and Ukraine which is currently under full Russian control, and in effect a Russian lake.
