Cold ironing/dock electrification/OPS
Cold ironing (onshore power supply, shore connection, shore-to-ship power or alternative maritime power) is the process of providing dockside electrical power to a ship at berth while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off. This reduces gaseous emissions, noise and vibrations within ports, benefitting port workers and nearby residents. The EALING project (European flagship Action for coLd ironING in ports) is an EU project to electrify all port energy supply.
The project involves a new substation within the Enel area of the former Marzocco plant. Additionally, there will be two conversion structures respectively serving ferries and cruises. The first will be located inside the current silos. The second will be in the area intended for the future cruise terminal near Calata Alto Fondale.
For the part of systems serving container ships, the construction of a facility near the terminal section of the SGC FI-PI-LI is envisaged. The remaining part of the system consists of conduits and cables between substations/cabins and cabins/quay sockets.
