Port System of Sardinia reports traffic figures for 2021, higher than last year, but below 2019

Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy (Ports Europe) January 26, 2022 - The port system of Sardinia has reported traffic figures for 2021, which exceed the numbers of last year, but remain, in most categories below those of 2019. The ports of the island are managed by Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mare Di Sardegna (AdSP - Sardinian Sea Port Authority) and the main ports are Cagliari, Olbia, Porto Torres and Golfo Aranci. Passenger traffic in 2021 Ferry passengers totalled 4.08 million, up 38% on 2020, but still down -18% on pre-Covid 2019. Traffic on routes of less than 20 miles (Santa Teresa and Portovesme) also increased, recording a +39% increase to 684,500 units). It's a similar story for cruises ship passengers - 57,371 in 2020 (441,958 in 2019, and 6,908 in 2020). Full recovery is expected this year. Cargo in 2021 Total cargo ended 2021 at 44 million tons, up +15% on last year's 38.3 million tons, but still #5% down on 2019 (46.26 million tons). Within this total, liquid bulk (mainly petroleum and refined) closed with an increase of +14%. On the other hand, the result of the growth of solid cargo (cereals, coal and minerals) amounts to +6%. On the other hand, the 2020-2021 ratio for Ro-Ro is more consistent, with a +20% increase, going from about 11.58 million tons to almost 13.8 million in the year just ended. This is just below the 2019 level. Containers (TEU) Whilst the growth in volumes in TEU handled on feeder vessels compared to 2020 is encouraging, the transshipment sector is still waiting for new operators to start its definitive relaunch. The port hopes that the concession of the Porto Canale container terminal will be settled and initiate growth in this sector. Investment The AdSP will receive funds from the state National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr – Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza), €100 million of which will be used for the construction of the Ro-Ro Terminal at the Canal Port and €70 million for the electrification of the quays at the ports of Cagliari, Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Santa Teresa and Portovesme. A further €25 million of state funding will be allocated to complete the work already planned for the Cagliari port area, the excavation of the seabed of the access channel and the waters of the Gulf of Olbia, the completion of the industrial port of Cocciani (Olbia) and the dredging of the commercial port of Porto Torres. A further €30 million has been allocated to the newly acquired port of Arbatax. Of these, €20 million will be allocated for the renovation and upgrading of the ferry dock, €2 million for the completion of the lighting system and €8 million for the maritime station. The total amount of infrastructural investments in the Sardinian port system will therefore amount to €550 million euros. Massimo Deiana, President of the AdSP "We close 2021 with decidedly encouraging percentages, which suggest a definitive exit from the worst period of crisis", explains Massimo Deiana, President of the AdSP del Mare di Sardegna, "Despite the aggravation of health protocols on normal operations, on the one hand, and an irregular trend in traffic, on the other, the system ports, and in particular the entire port cluster, have shown a great capacity to withstand at best, resisting to the lash of the crisis, remaining in play despite the numerous restrictions, without causing inconvenience to the mobility of passengers and goods.
