Portugal: Mainland seaports cargo report – May 2024

Lisbon, Portugal (Ports Europe) August 7, 2024 - The mainland's commercial port system handled 37.7 million tonnes of cargo in January-May 2024. This is up 7% on the same period of 2023. The month of May registered 8 million tonnes (+6.6%). The accumulated increase in traffic in the first five months of 2024 was mainly based on the significant growth seen in the port of Sines, +16.6%, which was only supported, but to a residual extent, by Lisbon (+1%). All the other mainland commercial ports recorded a drop in accumulated handling in the same period: Leixões (-5.2%); Aveiro (-4.9%); Viana do Castelo (-18%); Faro (-56.1v); Setúbal (-0.8%) and Figueira da Foz (-1.5%). Containers Container movement increased by 14.7% in the first five months of 2024 totalling 1.4 million TEU, with the contribution of movement in May, totalling 301,000 TEU (+12.8%). Growth in container traffic was due to positive variations in the ports of Sines (+25.1%), Lisbon (+9.7 per cent) and Aveiro (+58.9%), while this type of traffic fell in Leixões (-1.2%), Setúbal (-4.9%) and Figueira da Foz (-8%). Ship calls The 878 ship calls in May represent a reduction of -3.3% when compared to the same month last year, contributing to the negative record for the accumulated period from January to May 2024 of -3.4%, with 3,998 calls. With the exception of the ports of Lisbon and Portimão, which saw slight increases in ship arrivals, all the other commercial port infrastructures on the continent saw a reduction in the number of calls. Important developments To summarise, the following are the most important developments in the port markets, considered in terms of the binomial port and type of cargo handled: The increase in the movement of containerised cargo (+31.8%), oil products (+17.9%) and ore in the port of Sines (which did not handle this traffic in the same period of the previous year), together with the increases in breakbulk cargo (+377.3%) and containerised cargo (+16.5%) in Lisbon and the movement of coal (+200.3%) in Setúbal; and Reductions in other Solid bulk (-44.3%) and other liquid bulk (-38.5%) in the port of Lisbon, liquefied gas (-13.9%) and other liquid bulk (-71.9%) in Sines, Ro-Ro cargo (-25.4%), other solid bulk (-23.2%) and oil products (-10.8%) in the port of Leixões, as well as breakbulk cargo (-14.4%) in the port of Aveiro. Imports-exports Between January and May 2024, 22.1 million tonnes were disembarked, representing 58.7% of total traffic, representing an increase in handling of +3.2% compared to the same period in 2023, and 15.6 million tonnes were embarked, representing an increase of +12.9%, also compared to the equivalent five months of 2023. Portugal vs. Spain When comparing the performance of the national and Spanish port systems in the first five months of 2024, taking into account the differences and dimensions between the two, it can be seen that the national port system performed better, with greater growth on the Portuguese side, +7%, while the Spanish counterpart was limited to +3.5%. In the specific area of container handling, where both port systems evolved positively, national ports also recorded a higher growth, with +14.7 per cent, while Spanish ports as a whole recorded an increase of +12 per cent.
