Rome, Italy (PortSEurope) March 22, 2022 – The Italian government is considering installing two floating storage regasification units (FSRU) to increase imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The government aims to diversify its energy sourcing and reduce dependency on Russian energy.
An FRSU is a component required while transiting and transferring liquefied natural gas (LNG) via sea deliveries. It will enable Italy to import gas from places such as Qatar, the USA and Mozambique. Currently, Italy has three LNG-processing facilities which account for 20 of daily gas imports.
The two new facilities, whose total capacity is estimated at over 10 billion m³, could be located in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The Port of Ravenna has already indicated an interest in becoming one of the locations. Rome imports around 30 billion m³ of gas from Russia. This is about 40% of total imports.
