Russia’s ports handled 4.1 mln TEUs in Jan-Sep’24

Moscow, Russia (Ports Europe) October 27 – There are two different estimates of Russian container turnover for January-September. According to the country’s state-controlled analytical company MorCenter-TEK, Russia’s ports handled 4.103 million TEUs (11.9% more than in the first nine months of 2023. According to FESCO transport group (under the control of the giant RosAtom state corporation), which includes boxes transported via railways, it was 4.9 million TEUs (+7%). Russian statistics are generally unreliable due to the size of the country and the inherited Soviet style of reporting economic data. Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of Western sanctions against the country, the Kremlin encouraged major ports and transport companies not to disclose publicly sensitive business information. “Back in the USSR” for key Russian port In August, Russia’s largest seaport of Novorossiysk, on the Black Sea, was included in the list of companies that can decide not to disclose information about their activities, according to a decree signed by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. This is reminiscent of the Soviet (USSR) era, when economic and business information in the country was censored to percentages, not real figures. Russia’s total containers’ market in Jan-Aug’24 was 4.39 mln TEUs Russian ports: 446,600 TEUs in August, 3.65 mln TEUs in Jan-Aug’24 MorCenter-TEK details (ports only) Containers export was 1.434 million TEUs (+13.2%). Imported boxes were 1.715 million TEUs (+13.3%). Cabotage was 928,000 TEUs (+16.9%). Transit container handling was 25,600 TEUs (-71.8%). The number of loaded containers increased by 12.3% to 3.051 million TEUs, empty containers increased by 10.9% to 1.052 million TEUs. Regional statistics: Far Eastern ports - 1.971 million TEUs (+1.3%); Baltic Sea ports - 1.199 million TEUs (+41.8%), Black and Azov seas – 785,300 TEUs (+5.2%), Arctic ports – 141,000 TEUs (+18.8%), Caspian Sea ports – 6,000 TEUs (-27.5%). Caspian ports’ results how the complete failure of the Kremlin promoted International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a key sanctions-busting route linking Russia with Asia. However, the INSTC is plagued by problems with outdated or even missing infrastructure and administrative barriers. Most of the containers were handled in: Vladivostok Port (Far East) - 1.207 million TEUs; share of 29.4%), Big Port of St. Petersburg (Baltic Sea) - 1.012 million TEUs; 24.7%, Novorossiysk (Black Sea) 785,100 TEUs; 19.1%. FESCO details (include railways transport) Containers export was 1.333 million TEUs (+7%). Imported boxes were 2.1 million TEUs (+3%). Cabotage was more than 1 million TEUs (+8%). Transit rail transportation – 454,000 TEUs (+25%). The MorCenter-TEK statistics does not include containers transported by Russia’s railways. Regional statistics: Far Eastern ports – export (-27%), import (+9%); North-West Russian ports - Baltic and Arctic seas – export (+57%), import (+28%); Novorossiysk port – Black Sea – export (+28%), import (-3%). In September, Russia's container market was 542,000 TEUs (-1.2%). FESCO includes in its statistics the containers transported via Russian railways. 2023 container Russia’s processing results The container turnover of Russian seaports in 2023 was 4.96 million TEU, which is 15% more than in 2022, according to MorCenter-TEK. The top 12 ports in the country handled 4.916 million containers (+16%) or 99.11% of the total.
