Russia’s total containers’ market in Jan-Aug’24 was 4.39 mln TEUs

Moscow, Russia (Ports Europe) September 22, 2024 – Russia’s container market grew 8.1% in January-August 2024, compared to the first eight months of 2023 to 4.39 million TEUs, according to FESCO. The company (owned by the giant state corporation Rosatom) is one of the largest transport and logistics firms in Russia with assets in port, railway and integrated logistics. Container imports increased by 4% to 1.87 million TEUs, exports grew by 9% to 1.19 million TEUs, domestic container handling rose by 10% to 927,000 TEUs, and container transit increased by 25% to 402,000 TEUs. Russia’s container market in Jan-Jul’24 was 3.85 mln TEUs The growth driver remains container transportation through the Big Port of St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea. Containerised exports through the ports of Russia’s Far East decreased by 26% to 252,000 TEUs. Import container traffic via land border crossings from China to Russia continues to decline every month of the year. "The reduction in the number of export containers train shipments to the Far East (Trans-Siberian and Baikal-Amur railway lines), caused by infrastructure restrictions (dilapidated infrastructure), increases the imbalance of transport flows against the backdrop of growing imports, which, in turn, creates difficulties with the removal of containers from the Far Eastern seaports and the rear terminals to the west of Russia," FESCO said. Results from previous months and years In August, Russia’s container market grew by 0.6% compared to the same month in 2023 and reached 533,000 TEUs. Compared to July 2024, it decreased by 1.8%. In July, the container market grew by 6% compared to the same month of 2023 to 543,000 TEUs. In June, the market grew by 7% compared to the same month of 2023 to 553,000 TEUs. In May, the market was 580,000 TEUs (+6%). In April, the market grew by 8% to 574,000 TEUs. The container market in March was 557,000 TEUs (February, 533,000; January, 518,000 TEUs). Compared to December 2023, the Russian container market in January 2024 decreased by 8%. Russia’s container market in 2023 was almost 6.5 million TEUs, an increase of +18% compared to 2022. Russian container market in 2022 decreased by 15.9%, compared to 2021, to about 5.5 million TEUs. FESCO expects container traffic in Russia to grow by 5-6% annually until 2027. The market has recovered to the levels of 2021 (the last full year before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions against the country), president of the FESCO Arkady Korostelev said in January. The FESCO analysis of Russia’s container market includes foreign trade and transit container turnover of the country’s ports, foreign trade and transit container turnover of land crossings on the networks of Russian Railways (RZD), domestic transportation of containers through the RZD network and cabotage. MorCenter-TEK report for containers handled only via Russian ports Russian ports handled 446,600 TEUs in August 2024, an increase of 5.7% or 24,000 TEUs compared to August 2023, according to state-controlled analytical company MorCenter-TEK. Compared to July, the total turnover decreased by 3%. Imports increased slightly (10,000 TEUs more than in August 2023). Container handling in the Far Eastern ports continues to be high at 230,000 TEUs, despite a decline in volumes compared to July - the first since February. Turnover in the Arctic basin is growing, which is due to the start of navigation along the Moscow heavily promoted Northern Sea Route (NSR) in July. January-August results for containers process via ports During the first eight months of the year, Russian ports handled 3.65 million TEUs, which is 12.6% or 408,000 TEUs more than in the same period of 2023. Compared to the January-August 2021 period, the last full year before Russian full scale invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of Western sanctions against Moscow, container turnover decreased by 2% or 60,000 TEUs. Transshipment of export containers increased by 14% year-on-year, import containers by 13%, and cabotage containers by 18%. Transit through ports fell by 69% compared to last year. The Far Eastern ports handled 1.74 million TEUs in January-August (+1.5%). Baltic ports processed 1.1 million TEUs (+46%). Black and Azov seas ports handled 706,000 TEUs (+4.9%). Arctic ports processed 121,000 TEU, (+14%). Caspian Sea ports container turnover was 27% compared to the first eight months of 2023. A comparison between the FESCO and MorCenter-TEK report clearly shows the symbolic volume of Russia’s overland containers transportation – 740,000 TEUs during the first eight months of the year of 92,500 TEU’s per month. These were mostly boxes coming from China… 2023 containers handling results Container turnover of Russian sea ports in 2023 was 4.96 million TEU, which is 15% more than in 2022, according to MorCenter-TEK. The top 12 ports in the country handled 4.916 million containers (+16%) or 99.11% of the total.
