Valenciaport leads two European projects to connect container ships, ferries and cruise ships to the power grid simultaneously

Valenciaport budgets €16.8 million to accelerate the network connection when it obtains the OK from the Generalitat to build the electrical substation - March 3, 2020 Valenciaport leads two European projects that will accelerate the connection of container ships, ferries and cruises to the electricity grid once they are docked at the port. Two projects announced this morning by the president of Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia (APV - Valenciaport, Port Authority of Valencia), Aurelio Martínez, at the seminar "Funding systems change for Climate Action" organized by EIT Climate-KIC within the framework of Forinvest and that -with a total investment of €16.8 million - make up the APV roadmap to be the first port in the Mediterranean and Europe to reach zero emissions in 2030. An “ambitious” objective that as stressed by the president of the APV, “is anticipates the European ports sheet, fixed in 2050, and which will consolidate the port of Valencia as a world reference in terms of sustainability and environment”. The first EALING gas elimination project, OPS (Onshore Power Supply), has an investment of €8.5 million and will be activated to give full functionality to the future electrical substation, once it has been approved by the Generalitat. This infrastructure has already been approved by the Ministry of Economy and is waiting to obtain authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition. The objective is to eliminate all emissions of gases and fumes from ships at the dock. For this, together with the substation, investments are required to adapt berths, homogenize connection systems between vessels and ports. As detailed by the president of the APV, the adaptations of docks and terminals of Valenciaport could be ready for operation in June 2023, and will allow simultaneous connection to the power grid - in the port of Valencia - of up to six container ships, foir ferries and two cruises. The second EALING project has a budget of €7.3 million. It is also led by Valenciaport, and has the participation of up to 22 European ports from nine EU member countries. This initiative will allow the harmonization of the regulatory framework and will ensure the compatibility of the port with the vessel through the implementation of technical studies. The two projects are expected to be launched during 2020 (April in the case of the substation and June in the case of legislative homogenization) and that they have grants from the European Union. However, the president of the APV has defended that, given the relevance of both projects, "Valenciaport will continue with or without European grants." Accompanied by the general director of the Valenciaport Foundation, Antonio Torregrosa and the director of EIT Climate-KIC, Jose Luis Muñoz, the president of the APV has exhibited this morning at Feria Valencia the environmental policy of Valenciaport since the 90s began the first measurements and the first certificates were obtained. Since then Valenciaport has established itself as a European reference in environmental management at the port level and has the most demanding environmental certifications such as the European environmental certificate for PERS ports (Port Environmental Review System), ISO 14001 and the European Certificate of Management and Audit Environmental EMAS III (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme), the most prestigious certification in Europe, among others. Aurelio Martínez has exposed the "Valenciaport 20-30 Plan"; the road map until 2030, focused on the goal of becoming a “zero emissions” port and based on pillars such as research (through entities such as the Valenciaport Foundation, Ports 4.0 etc.) and infrastructure. In this sense, Aurelio Martínez recalled that “the new terminal has committed in writing to reduce 98% of CO2 compared to what is now operating despite the fact that traffic will increase from 1.3 million to 5 million containers. It will be all electric, it will allow all ships to connect to the power grid at all their docks etc". He also added that the commitment "is the same" in the case of the new passenger terminal "in which they must solar panels and reduce CO2 emissions etc". During the “Funding systems change for Climate Action” seminar that has brought together representatives from the public and private sector at Feria Valencia with the aim of building a financial community that supports the project being developed by EIT Climate-KIC, Antonio Torregrosa highlighted the work of research developed from the Valenciaport Foundation "that allow the implementation of large-scale projects that contribute to place Valenciaport as a benchmark in sustainability." Along the same lines, the director of EIT Climate-KIC, Jose Luis Muñoz, acknowledged “Valenciaport's commitment to lead the change in sustainability”. “The ports - said José Luís Muñoz - are places where multiple systems collide: maritime transport, energy, waste, tourism and other types of transport. But for that same reason, its potential to make a powerful change is enormous. In a phased manner, EIT Climate-KIC will demonstrate from the SuperLabPorts located in Valenciaport how maritime centers can be catalysts to reverse the rapid growth of emissions from maritime transport and international trade.
