Valenciaport presents new container terminal benefits to local socialist party

Valencia, Spain (Ports Europe) February 28, 2020 - Aurelio Martínez, president of Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia (APV - Valenciaport, Port Authority of Valencia) has presented details of the new container terminal to the PSPV-PSOE (Valencia Socialist Party), emphasising its importance to the port. A key issue is the environment, and Martínez says that a new Environmental Impact Statement (EIS - Declaración de Impacto Ambiental) for this project is not necessary, adding that the project has been modified to meet various issues. Specifically, as Aurelio Martínez explained, “there is no significant increase in emissions to the atmosphere, or from discharges to public channels or to the coast, there is no significant increase in the generation of waste or the use of natural resources and there is no effect on Natura 2000 Network Protected Spaces. Therefore, all legal services guarantee that the 2007 EIS is still fully in force”. The president said that the new terminal projected in the north extension will be the most environmentally advanced in the world, since it will minimize the emission of CO2 through the electrical supply to ships and through the use of up to 98 % of electrical machinery. As Aurelio Martínez indicated, this commitment of the new terminal for the environment is aligned with the commitment to the sustainability of the Port Authority of Valencia. "A commitment - explained the president of the APV - that has led Valenciaport to be chosen by the European Union to host the Superlab Ports of the Climate-Kic project, a laboratory on climate change in port environments". Secondly, Martínez spoke of the competitive advantages granted to companies by having a transoceanic port such as Valenciaport. To this end, he recalled that in 2019, the port of Valencia handled 80 million tons and remained the first port in Spain and the fifth in Europe in container traffic. “Our geostrategic situation generates very important competitive advantages because in our closest hinterland we house 55% of Spain's GDP and 60% of the country's exports. This allows us to generate very important economies of scale that result in the competitiveness of our services and, therefore, in the competitiveness of the Valencian and Spanish companies that use us in their exports”. The president then went on to say that according to the data of the last study prepared by Universitat Politècnica de València, Valenciaport generates 38,866 jobs. Likewise, the report on the northern extension commissioned by Confederación Empresarial de la Comunitat Valenciana (CEV) and Propeller Club Valencia shows that private investment in the new terminal - around €1,100 million - will generate around 15,000 additional jobs". Last September, Terminal Investment Limited Sàrl (TIL) was awarded the contract for the construction and operation of the new container terminal of the North Expansion of the port. APV says that he new terminal will be the most modern in the world and 98% of its machinery will be electric. The terminal, which will have a high degree of automation, will promote the creation of a cluster of service companies around it with job creation of high and medium qualification. Terminal Investment Limited Sàrl (TIL) operates container terminals around the world.
