Valenciaport signs contract with Generalitat to allocate 80,000 m2 of Fuente San Luis as provisional container warehouse

The contract between the Valencia Port Authority (APV) and the Generalitat will allow importers and exporters to cut costs and solve the problem of space in the terminals due to the accumulation of import containers - April 23, 2020 The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has signed an agreement with the Valencian Housing and Land Entity of the Generalitat Valenciana (Entidad Valenciana de Vivienda y Suelo de la Generalitat Valenciana) to allocate 80,000 m² of Fuente San Luis to a provisional container warehouse. This parcel, property of the Generalitat, located in the area of the expansion of the Fuente San Luis facilities, has been temporarily rented in order to deposit import containers. With this contract, the APV seeks to solve two problems that have arisen in the terminals and in importing and exporting companies due to the coronavirus crisis. The first of them, to solve the problem of lack of space that the container terminals of the port of Valencia are experiencing due to the storage of containers full of imports derived from the pandemic caused by COVID-19. And the second is to prevent the increase in costs generated by the unnecessary stay of containers in terminals without them being evacuated, both for import and export. The temporary closure of companies not classified as essential, together with the resumption of shipments of goods from Southeast Asia, especially China after its industrial reopening, have caused the containers, once unloaded, to remain in the terminals for not being able to follow their way to the final customer due to the lack of activity of these. Preventing this foreseeable congestion will therefore generate benefits for terminals and for importers: agility of terminal loading and unloading management work; and lower costs for importers and exporters, given that their merchandise will remain on the terminal terminal's yard for the right time of collection and delivery. Anticipating the situation derived from the health emergency to avoid congestions in the terminals and hinder their proper functioning, due to the consequent slowdown in loading and unloading operations, is what has prompted the APV to look for new spaces. Thus, in the interior of the port of Valencia, a large area has been set up, in coordination with Customs, next to the Cruise Pier 1 of the northern extension as a full container depot area and work is being done to use alternative spaces close to the port area. With these measures, the APV intends to offer adequate logistics solutions for the storage of merchandise while minimizing costs to the end customer. The contract signed with the Valencian Housing and Land Entity of the Valencian Government authorizes the APV to use the land exclusively for the activity of depositing containers for a period of 30 days, extendable for another 30 days and, in any case, until 45 days after the end of the Alarm Status. The plot of the Fuente de San Luís indicated above, together with other possible locations in which work is already underway, will alleviate any potential congestion in the port of Valencia until the situation caused by the Alarm State in our country is normalized and the Freight inflows and outflows of containers at the port return to normal.
